In his letter to the Serbian president Aleksander Vučić, congratulating him on Serbia’s statehood day, the US president emphasised that mutual recognition between Serbia and Kosovo is the only way to normalise relations between the two countries. In the letter published on the Serbia president’s official page, it states that “the United States remains unwavering in its support to your commitment to deepen regional cooperation, and in particular to your efforts to normalise relations with Kosovo.” Trump further urged Belgrade and Prishtina to reach an agreement that both sides can support. Trump also sent congratulations to Kosovo’s president, Hashim Thaci, on the 11th anniversary of Kosovo independence, underlining that normalisation of relations with Serbia are necessary for the country’s integration in Western institutions.
